For so many of us, birthdays are complicated.
Society says our birthday should be a day of joy, surrounded by love and celebration. But as a trauma therapist, I hear a very different story from my clients. Their birthdays are far from joyful, often filled with shame, sadness, and a deep sense of loneliness.
If birthday’s feel heavy you’re not being sensitive, or ungrateful. Your feelings are valid and may be a response to your history which hasn’t been easy.
Our bodies will remember what our minds try to gloss over. If you grew up in an environment where your needs weren’t prioritised, where you were overlooked, or where you had to act like an adult when you were still a child, your birthday can be a massive trigger. Your system remembers the times you were left waiting, the disappointment of needs unmet, and the silence when you should have been celebrated.
When we carry these experiences into adulthood, a birthday won’t welcome party energy. Instead, it can feel like an excruciating test to see if we are finally worthy of being seen.
So, how can we heal and stop the cycle of dreading our own milestones? In this podcast episode, I explore birthday trauma and how we can begin to shift our perspective. Walk with me to talk about:
- Understanding Birthday Activation: Why your nervous system goes into “threat mode” around your birthday and how to recognize it without judgment.
- The Shame of Having Needs: Let’s dismantle the idea that wanting to be celebrated is “needy.” Belonging, recognition, and care are fundamental human requirements, not luxuries.
- Creating a New Approach: Instead of forcing a high-pressure celebration, I’m sharing how to approach your birthday with intentionality, self-compassion, and a “care plan” that actually feels good for you.
Healing doesn’t mean your birthday will magically become pain-free overnight. It means you learn to show up for yourself with the compassion you deserved as a child. It’s about self-parenting, giving yourself the care you were hoping others would provide first.
If you’re ready to change your relationship with your birthday and yourself, I invite you to listen to the full episode.
