If you’ve ever wondered whether you need therapy or coaching, you’re not alone. It’s a question not talked about enough and important for anyone deeply committed to their growth but feel unsure about where to invest their time, energy, and money. In this week’s podcast, I’m opening up this conversation so you can begin to explore what kind of support is right for you.
This conversation matters because therapy still carries a lot of stigma in our communities.
Coaching, on the other hand, is often seen as more acceptable and aspirational, linked to success, productivity, and moving forward.
But here’s the truth, choosing the wrong type of support at the wrong time can slow your progress and even course harm. That’s why understanding the difference between therapy and coaching is so important.
Therapy is a space to explore your emotional world, past experiences, and internal patterns. For Black folks it’s an essential space to explore how racism, intergenerational trauma, and cultural experiences shape your life and sense of self. Therapy allows you to slow down and understand how your past and present are connected so you can begin to build a more stable foundation within yourself.
Coaching is more focused on the present and future, supporting you with setting and achieving goals, making decisions, moving forward in your career/ business and creating change to step into a new identity. Coaching is often about expansion but requires an appropriate level of emotional capacity to engage with the process.
One of the most important differences between therapy and coaching is your current capacity. If your system feels overwhelmed, dysregulated, or stuck in survival patterns, therapy may be the most supportive place to begin.
If you feel more resourced and able to take action, coaching can help you move forward with clarity and intention. However, moving too quickly into coaching without addressing underlying trauma can sometimes lead to burnout, overwhelm and difficulty following through on your goals.
I take a trauma-informed approach to both therapy and coaching which means working at a pace that honours your nervous system. We’ll focus on a few small areas at a time and support you to integrate the change, rather than trying to rush it. Sustainable growth doesn’t come from pushing harder, it comes from working with your system, not against it. This isn’t about getting it “right,” it’s about developing a deeper relationship with yourself so you can choose the kind of support that truly meets you where you are now.
